'distilled', 04:07, 2022, film by Sym Stellium & melissandre varin
music by Eric Foy / exode exotique

Who are we beyond representation politics? Who do we become when we are put in a position to represent others? In ‘distilled’, movement artist Sym Stellium and film & visual artist melissandre varin explore the ‘wild beyond’ outside controlled environments associated with reality television; outside the stripping away of self and dance culture/ history- and instead tap into the primality of intuitive dance and movement. It is a peeling away of veils and the grief that comes with being the ‘good’ other under gazes of expectation. Using the theory of the undercommons (coined by Stefano Harney and Fred Moten), ‘distilled’ operates within a space of insubordination.
Commissioned by Coventry University Centre for Dance Research (C-DaRE) with Coventry Pride- as part of BBC History's 'Strictly Inclusive' research for the 100th Anniversary of the BBC.
